Del Mar Opening Day-It's All About the Hats!

Del Mar where the surf meets the turf!  Opening day was last week.  It's a day to see and be seen and it's all about the hats!  Here's mine.  I love hats, but I never wear them, so it was fun to dress up for a day.   I didn't have time to shop so I picked this one up the day before with the kids.  While I didn't have much time to put effort into my hat selection take a look at some of these!

Do you notice a theme here?  No one could hold up their own heads. I could never do it.  But thanks ladies for putting on a great show.  You looked fabulous!  Here's the grand prize winner who played off where the surf meets the turf theme literally!
There were 46,588 people there setting an all-time Opening Day record.  It was fun to be a part of the excitement, but we ran out of steam around 6pm before the last races and ending up coming home to put our kids to sleep.  Family weekends are on Saturday and Sunday. The fun continues through Sept 7th.

The Zen Mom Redesign!

Here's a sneak peek at The Zen Mom's new look.  For the last few months I have been working on my blog's relaunch. But it's not just the design that will be evolving, but The Zen Mom's mission.

I started The Zen Mom, as a new mom 3 years ago as a way to share with others resources I found and what I learned from my experiences. Now as a mother of 2,  I realize being a Zen Mom is not just about finding and trying to do what’s best for your children and your family, but also about continuing to nurture your mind and soul.   It’s about your journey as a mom, but not forgetting your journey as a woman.

I will continue to share information, reviews and giveaways, but I will also be adding videos, more photos and new posts filled with stories of inspiration, food, travel and a behind the scenes look at my TV life.
Stay tuned.  I hope to relaunch next week!

Zenspiration: "The Days Are Long, But The Years Are Short"

I just finished reading the Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin and I don't know why this one quote made such an impact on me.  "The Days Are Long, But The Years Are Short."  There were many points in the book that inspired me, but this one in particular made me cry.   I've heard it before.  People telling you to cherish the moments with your kids because soon they will be all grown up, but this time it was different.

Reading those words was like putting a mirror on my life and someone was telling me, "How dare you wish away the day!"  For the past few weeks I have been very focused on work.  Not just when I'm working, but even on days when I'm at home.  I've been feeling overwhelmed with everything I want to do for my kids, for the house, for my career, for myself.  There just doesn't seem to be enough time to fit it all in, so I multi-task.   Sure I can watch the kids, fold laundry and check my e-mail at the same time!   I've just been trying to get through the day, so I can check off my to do lists.  I try to do it all, when in reality I'm cheating myself of being in the moment.

Reading this quote, made me feel guilty and sad that I have been trying to rush through the day. Hurry up and get dressed so we can have breakfast, hurry up and eat so we can get out of the house, hurry up and take one kid to preschool so I can focus on the other one, hurry up and put them down for a nap so I can have a break to work, hurry up and go to bed so I can take care of other things.

It also reminded me of what I was missing.

Tonight after dinner I didn't wash the dishes right away.  I sat with my two kids as they played joyfully.   When I put my 19 month old daughter to bed I held her in my arms and danced around the room first.  She smiled at me lovingly and giggled.  Then I went downstairs where my 3 year old son was watching Barney.  Usually I use this precious TV time to check my e-mail before I give him a bath, but tonight I sat next to him and cuddled as we sang the "I love you song" together.

Not every night ends this peaceful and zen.  There are "those" days that you are just trying to get through.

"The Days Are Long, But The Years Are Short"  reminded me hit the "pause" button and appreciate the moment before it passes.  Here's a video that captures the thought.  Grab a tissue.

Quick No Bake Fourth of July Cakes!

Happy Fourth of July Weekend!  What are your plans?  Are you headed out to a bar-b-que or hosting one?  If you're like me, you probably want to keep it simple. Here's my shortcut to a festive Fourth of July dessert if you don't have time to bake.
Ingredients:
               -Red and Blue Berries
                           (boysenberries, blueberries/strawberries or raspberries)
               -Any cake
(Pound cake, Angel Food Cake, Cheesecake)
-Whipcream/Frosting or Sourcream (if you're using cheesecake)

Here are some examples of flag cakes.  The first one is more professional looking.  Use pound cake/angel food cake slices, put them in the pan, then spread a thin layer of whip cream/frosting.  Lay out the blueberries in a square in the left corner.  Then put on the red berries in stripes (raspberries shown in 2 rows, but you can also use strawberries in one row). Then use whipcream in a can for the stripe design in between the berries and the stars.

If you want to make it even easier you can try this design. Just spread the whip cream and lay out the blueberries in the corner and use sliced strawberries for stripes.

If you like the red and white theme for Fourth of July, but think a flag cake is a little too much, then you can go for this design! I like using a frozen cheesecake covering it with a layer of sourcream, then topping it with fresh berries in this circular design.  If you are using angel food cake you can also cut it in half and put a layer of whip cream in the middle, then put the top back on, spread more whip cream on top and then cover with berries.
Low fat/Gluten free option-Don't use cake at all.   Follow the first or second design.  Substitute the cake with banana slices.
Tips-If your using whip cream make sure you don't leave it out too long before you serve it or it may melt.
Happy Weekend!

Cool Travel Bib-Bibagogo Giveaway!

See my daughter getting all messy while eating on vacation?  Well, that cute strawberry shortcake design is not her dress, it's actually a bib!   It's called a Bibagogo.

What's cool about it is that the bib has 3 hidden pockets in back (includes 2 washcloths and a spoon)and it all rolls up easy for traveling.  No more digging around the bottom of the diaper bag!   I didn't use the washcloths, but they were nice to have. You can tuck away anything you want in the pockets.

I've tried a lot of bibs before, but what I really like about the Bibagogo is that it combines a lot of the features I need in one.  It doesn't stain.  I just wipe it off or rinse it and it's ready to go again.   It's long and has a catch pocket-so no more messy bottoms.  Also, it has snaps instead of velcro so my kids can't rip them off.   And they're really cute!  Bibagogo is offering the Blue Rainboot Design to TZM readers for today's giveaway.

To enter the giveaway for the Blue Rainboot Bibagogo:
1. Subscribe to The Zen Mom or let us know you are already a subscriber with a comment below.
2. Follow us on Twitter, tweet about it, and tells us you did with a comment below or tweet which Bibagogo is your favorite.

Giveaway ends on Monday, July 4th midnight PST.  Good Luck!

20,000 Britax Strollers Recalled

If you have a Britax B-Nimble Stroller you need to check the model numbers.  The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a voluntary recall because of risk of brake failure.

An audible click heard when the brake pedal is pressed can give a false impression that the brake is fully engaged when it is not. When the brake is not engaged, the stroller can move unexpectedly posing a risk of injury to the child. Britax has received seven reports of the brake not being fully engaged. No injuries have been reported.

This recall involves B-Nimble umbrella strollers manufactured on or after August 1, 2010.
Here are the model numbers U311771, U311773, U311775 and U311780.

The date of manufacture labels and model numbers can be found on the lower frame/tube on either the left or the right side. The strollers were sold in a variety of colors including black and silver, Cowmooflage (black and white), green and red.
Britax says you should stop using the stroller and call them for information and to request a replacement.  If you do use it you need to make sure the brake is fully engaged.

Zenspiration: What I Learned Traveling With 2 Kids!

"Traveling with kids is a lot like life- it may not always be easy getting where you want to go, but what really matters is what you do when you do when you get there!"  -TheZenMom

Traveling with children is not always a very zen experience, but what you and your family get out of it may be.  Our cross country trip to visit family in Ithaca ended with a 3 hour flight delay, a missed connection in Newark, an overtired crying 3 year old, a 17 month old that threw up on me just as I finished strapping her to me in the Baby Bjorn as we were disembarking, and lost luggage.  There were more crazy travel tales,  but what I'd like to share with you is what I learned from our family vacation.

No matter how light you plan to travel there's always too much stuff!

After a red-eye a luggage cart doubles as a bed! :)
Even if your daughter looked like this just seconds before, she can still throw up on you!
Here's some useful information:
-If you have a toddler, bring a DVD player
-Always bring a baby carrier so you can have as many hands free as possible.
-Bring small toys and to make the "wow" factor last longer, wrap them up so it takes them longer to open it.
-Bring a change of clothes for the kids and for you.  I'm glad I had one or I would have smelled like throw up.  If your child is potty trained bring even more underwear and bottoms.
-If you bring a carry-on, also carry a foldable bag with it so you take all your must have's out if they make you check your bag.
-Always have food, but don't feed them too much or it may backfire.

Now for the Zen part.
Once the travel day passed and we were able to be with family, I learned it's good to get out of the routine and for me and my kids to experience new places, new people, even if it means having to shlep them and all our stuff cross country and that they didn't sleep on the red-eye.
We went to Eco Village Ithaca for my sister in law's high school graduation and brother in law's coming of age ceremony.  Upstate New York is very different than California and it was great to see my kids play in a community where toys are shared right outside your front door,  where there are waterfalls nearby and where my son can pick strawberries from an organic garden.

Most importantly, always appreciate the moment.  With all the packing, nap schedules, etc.  I forgot why we were there in the first place to be with family.

But one of the most important lessons I didn't learn until I returned home, it was the wisdom that came from my 15 year old brother in law's coming of age ceremony.   I was too busy juggling the two kids at the time to notice what he had written down as his values and beliefs.

It is today's zenspiration and I'd like to share it with you.

Be honest, no matter how difficult it may be, and no matter how much discomfort or consequences it may bring to you.

Be fair to all people and living things.

Respect all living things in order to be more respected, avoid creating enemies, help others feel valued, and set an example for others.

Be thoughtful of what you say. Your words can be a force for good or for creating harm.

Be confident in yourself, and show your confidence in others.

Be loyal to the people you love.

Know your goals and make them come true. Be aware of what's motivating you.

Be strong in your loving; don't let fear guide you.

Be awake to life in the present moment. Appreciate the process as much as the goal. Enjoy the little things. Be aware of what you're thinking and feeling.

Live your life in harmony with all of these values and beliefs.

What are your values and beliefs?  With our busy lives, it's so hard to even finish a thought sometimes. Take some time and and write yours down.  In the meantime,  happy travels this summer.

Zen Letters: A Letter To My Dad-Happy Father's Day!

I hope you had a great Father's Day celebrating the wonderful men in your life!  This year I had dinner with my husband and kids, but didn't get to hang out with my Father, but I did wish him a Happy Father's Day.

I'm starting a new TZM series called "Zen Letters". I'm starting the first one with a tribute to my Father.

Dear Baba (father in Chinese),

Now that I am a parent myself it makes me reflect on all your sacrifices and what it took for you and mom to raise a family.   You were in your 20's, still learning English, moving to a place for new opportunities.  You left your family, friends and the security of what you knew for a new country, a new culture and a new life. Then I was born. To make ends meet you had to give up some of your dreams, and ended up working long hours in a Chinese restaurant to make sure I would accomplish my dreams.  You were learning how to fit in a new culture, and at the same time learning how to be a Dad.

Then your little baby started to grow up and had a mind of her own.  Sorry for questioning, "Why we couldn't be more American?"  Thank you for making me speak Chinese.  Now I am fluent and can teach my children.  Thank you for making me authentic Chinese meals and not just getting pizza and McDonalds like I asked.  Now I can cook too!

As a teen-ager, thank you for setting boundaries and making me work for what I wanted.  Even if that meant I had to work to pay for car insurance and drive to parties in the "family wagon."

Thank you for your help to put me thru college and the freedom to be myself in college. After graduation, thank your for giving me the support to move back home when I was still looking for a job. When I made it back to Los Angeles, as a news reporter, thank you for not only trying to watch all my newscasts, but taping them for me and saving them in the cabinet.

I appreciate all that you have gone through and everything you have done for me many times silently.  Now that I am a mother I realize the sacrifices of a parent and I thank you.
Happy Father's Day!
Love,
Wan Wan (My Chinese name)

Who are you grateful for and have you had a chance to share your Zen Letter?

Plush Show Highlights

It was a fun and fabulous day at the Plush Show at the Vibiana Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles.  Dozens of parents and expecting moms gathered to check out the latest baby and toddler finds and to have a little fun.
Here are a few highlights.  Hosts Catt Sadler and Jason Kennedy from E! greeted excited parents with giveaways!  One of my favorites at the event was stroller cleaning by CleanBeeBaby.  When's the last time you cleaned your stroller?  I know we all do a little wipe and shake to get all the crumbs out, but who has time to really clean it.  What a cool service!  They are a mobile unit making stops all over Los Angeles.
I was shooting a segment for Her Say-a new online web series-so I didn't make it to the manicure and massage station, but a well-deserved break for the moms there.
I love gummy and sour candy, but I try not to indulge too often, but check out these treats from Sweets Indeed. Candy Kabob Sweet Skewers each one has 1/2 pound of candy!
Project Nursery was also on hand providing design and party planning inspiration.
Beautiful dessert table featuring cake pops, but now take a look at the vases next to it...pie pops.  Yum! Too cute! Could this be a new trend?
Here's a peek at the Alouette crib that's about to hit stores from Petit Nest-a modern nursery line by actress Tiffani Theissen and Designer Lonni Paul from HGTV's Design Star.

I enjoyed meeting all the pregnant moms, parents. and inspirational business owners.  The Zen Mom Giveaway winner Nicole also stopped by with her husband and baby boy! Stay tuned for more from the show and my HerSay segment. I will feature more innovative products for your little one later.

Ritual Cleanse vs. Juice It Yourself

Champion Juicer G5-PG710 G5-PG720-WHITE Commerical Heavy Duty Juicer

While it's not technically summer yet, most mark Memorial Day weekend as the start of the summer season. Time to get beach ready!

I'm not one for diets, or for juice fasts, but now that I'm done breastfeeding my 2nd child and with summer around the corner- it was time for to jump start something.   I usually eat pretty well, but as a foodie, I love to indulge in great food and have a sweet tooth.   I was feeling blah- it was time for a change!   Many of my friends and family have been talking about juice cleansing and how good they felt after.  So I decided to do some research.  Which cleanse is better?  Do I do buy a certain system or should I just juice myself?

What Is A Juice Cleanse?
Typical cleanse plans last from three to 14 days.  Cleanse advocates claim that toxins from food additives and preservatives, pesticides, hormones, pollution, tobacco use and other environmental sources accumulate in your cells. These toxic chemicals cause a variety of health problems, including low energy, fatigue, gastrointestinal distress, skin problems, irritability and depressed mood. Cleanse diets purportedly draw toxins out of your cells and clear them from your body, improving overall health.

Types of Cleanses
There are all kinds of cleanses out there.  The Master Cleanse is popular-you drink only lemon juice, pure maple syrup, cayenne pepper and filtered water.  I wasn't into that.  Other cleanses restrict meals to only juices.  The Ritual Cleanse is also popular right now.

Ritual Cleanse

My friend Jennifer did the 5 day ritual cleanse - here's her take:
"This was my first cleanse, and it was incredibly invigorating!  I did the 5-day seasonal cleanse with shred all 5 days so I could work out.  I doubted whether I would feel anything but hunger, but on the second day, I all of a sudden had tons of energy, and my mood was fantastic (in spite of my 3-year old and 1-year old).  Mild hunger set in around Day 3, but I was drinking the juice so often that it never got bad until the very end.  Day 5 was by far the hardest day.  I hit a wall on Day 5 - totally drained and starving.  This change was probably because I had worked out hard the previous day and had not gotten as much sleep as I would have liked (for reasons unrelated to the cleanse).

The day after finishing the cleanse, I craved grilled veggies similar to the way I craved apples when I was pregnant!  I also missed the green juice.  Since returning to solid food, I have noticed a difference in my energy levels after I eat a plate full of veggies versus a bowl of oatmeal.  I fell totally revived after the veggies and sluggish after the oatmeal.  I'm also surprised by how little food it takes to satisfy me now.

There are 6 17-oz juices/drinks per day, plus 2 more (the shred) if you workout.  The only juice I really couldn't stomach and didn't drink much of was the pre-shred.  Here are the ingredients:
1:  spinach, romaine, kale, celery, cucumber, green apple, lemon (the first sip was a bit of a shock, but I ended up loving this juice)
2:  apple, grapefruit, celery, cinnamon for first 3 days; strawberries, watermelon, young coconut water for last 2 days
3:  spinach, romaine, kale, celery, cucumber, green apple, ginger
4:  filtered water, lemon, agave, cayenne (this was very light, but the cayenne woke up my senses!)
5:  spinach, romaine, kale, celery, cucumber, green apple
6:  cashew, alkaline water, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, agave  (very tasty, and satisfied the need to "chew" something because of the small bits of cashew, but it left my stomach a little unsettled because it was so rich in fat)

pre-shred:  carrot, beet, celery, apple, pear (I barely drank this, it was too sweet for me)
post-shred:  almond, alkaline water, vanilla, cinnamon, agave (really yummy and surprisingly creamy - satisfied my milk fix)

The green juice was actually tasty and satisfying and became one of my favorites as the days progressed.  The biggest problem I had was drinking water - just couldn't stomach any more liquid with everything I was already drinking.  The program isn't cheap, but if your spare time is sparse (as mine is), it's probably worth the money than if you were to buy all of the organic ingredients, clean them, and then juice them, particularly if you don't already own a juicer.

I truly feel like my body was "reset" after completing this cleanse.  I am loathe to put anything into my body that is processed, I have recommitted to fruits and veggies, and I am trying to eat organic whenever possible.  Ritual Cleanse reminded me that we are what we eat."

Juicing Yourself
I have a Champion Juicer so I decided to try to juice myself.  Or actually my mother in law was planning a juice cleanse so we decided to do it together.  It's a lot of work.  You have to juice most of it in the morning so you have all the juice fresh and ready or you may give into food.  The 3 green juices have the same base so in the morning I added lemon, for lunch I added ginger and dinner I drank it plain.   Juice 6 and the Post Shred-I soaked almonds and cashews and used a Magic Bullet blender right before I needed the drink.

Day 1 was fine.  I felt really energized and since I was working out in the morning I had more juice than I could drink with the pre and post shred.  Surprisingly I wasn't starving, but it was hard when I walked into my pantry and when I was making the kids dinner.  I realized how I unconsciously put food into my mouth throughout the day.  Like when they want a cracker or when I taste test their food.  I had to stop myself several times.

Day 2 was a little harder.  I didn't workout so I didn't have the 2 extra juices.  By dinner I was hungry, but still feeling good.  I couldn't wait for juice 6 just so I could chew the cashews.

Day 3 I still felt good even thru my workout.   I had made it thru and was really enjoying my juices.  Food sounded good, but I was okay not to eat.

So after 3 days of just juice, what was my first meal? Guacamole.    I was craving something flavorful, yet didn't feel like eating anything heavy. I think I needed the fat.  It was nice to chew again, but I didn't really feel like eating alot.  I probably could have made it thru the 5 day cleanse. In fact, I really wanted more green juice.  I had some left over so I also had that for breakfast and continued to drink the green juice for 2 more days.

So that's the upside of having a juicer. Now I can make more green juice whenever I want.  In fact, I think I'm going to make it a part of my regular diet.   So was it worth it to juice myself?  Yes, if you have the time and have someone doing it with you.  But it is a lot of work and a lot of clean up for a 3- day or 5 day cleanse.

Bottomline-I'm really glad I did the juice cleanse.  I feel good and I'm eating a lot less.  I did lose a few pounds, but for me it's not about losing weight-its about being more aware about what I put into my body.

Go The F*** To Sleep!- A New Children's Book?

This book hasn't even been published yet, and it's already climbed the Amazon.com preorder list. Crazy!  So it either cracks you up or your mouth just dropped open in shock! You may hate to admit it, but this title pretty much sums up a parent's nightly ritual and frustration of getting a toddler to sleep.
If you're a parent who hasn't gotten to that stage yet?  Just wait.:)!
Having just put my 3 year old to bed,  I can still hear his sweet voice ringing in my head.
 "Mommie-I need something."
 "What dear?"
"Mommie- I need a drink of water."
"OK, here you go, I love you."
"Mommie I need to go pee-pee.
 "You just went pee-pee!"
 "Mommie- I need a sock."
"You have socks on, go to sleep dear."
"Oh, I need another drink of water."
"OK, now go to sleep.  Good night!"
 "Good night."
 "See you in the morning."
"Mommie, I need to go poo poo!" Aghhhhh!!!!!

So what started as an off-the cuff Facebook post by the author who was tired and trying to get his 2 year old daughter to go to sleep turned into what Adam Mansbach is now calling a "children's book for adults"

Galleys had not been distributed, so the only people who have seen the work are a handful of booksellers who received a PDF via e-mail a few weeks ago.  Here's a preview- each of the book's 32 pages is written in the style of a classic children's picture book, but there are two conversations going on: The first two lines are what the parent is saying to the kid; the second half is the internal monologue that is never said.

The cats nestle close to their kittens now.
The lambs have laid down with the sheep.
You’re cozy and warm in your bed, my dear
Please go the f**k to sleep
The eagles who soar through the sky are at rest
And the creatures who crawl, run and creep.
I know you're not thirsty. That's bullsh*t. Stop lying.
Lie the f**k down, my darling, and sleep.

Click here to see the PDF.
The publisher says, "The book is all about the obligation of a good parent to internalize the frustration and take the irrational behavior of a child and absorb it oneself. The book is an outlet for that frustration, but it completely reinforces parents sucking it up and dealing with it. There's never a moment where the kid suffers because of the parent."

So if you are frustrated trying to get to that "me" time at the end of the day, know you are not alone!
